CHICAGO — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora will not attend the ceremony at the White House on Thursday honoring the 2018 World Series champions.

“The government has done some things back home that are great, but we still have a long ways to go. That’s our reality. It’s pretty tough to go celebrate when we’re where we’re at. I’d rather not go and be consistent with everything.” — Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora

Cora cited the Trump administration’s response to Hurricane Maria in his native Puerto Rico as the reason for his decision.

“The government has done some things back home that are great, but we still have a long ways to go,” he said on Sunday following a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. “That’s our reality. It’s pretty tough to go celebrate when we’re where we’re at. I’d rather not go and be consistent with everything.”

Cora recently said he might attend the ceremony and say something, but had a change of heart after speaking with family and friends.

“We talked about it and decided (not going) was the best way to do it,” he said.

Cora said he informed the Red Sox of his decision a few days ago. Boston plays at Baltimore Monday through Wednesday and has a day off on Thursday.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts also said on Sunday he won’t visit the White House.

Puerto Rico was broke years before President Trump. This is America and to be invited to our White House is an honor and the office of our president is to be respected! We just gave 91 BILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS to your country of Puerto Rico and help of hospital ships and everything necessary to help hurting people. Politics should not be an issue. Without America Puerto Rico would be a mess! Sad to see Mr. Cora chooses to make his money in America and chooses to disrespect this country by his choice. I think Mr. Cora should go back to Puerto Rico and live and work. Maybe then he would look at things differently. The presidency should have no place in his decision as presidents change at least every 4 to 8 years but The White House is :The People’s House”! I was raised to RESPECT my country. Mr. Cora has made his choice and I view it as a very sad decision.

Hey Alex…..why don’t you check out how much $$ was given to Puerto Rico for aid and ask for an accounting of the money BEFORE you go and blast the President. I can’t wait to see you walking around with a FOOT inside your mouth.
And while you are at it, take those others with you and enjoy your crabs as you skip the White House !! How much more do you think should have been done ??

Alex who? Life and baseball will go on whether these dopes go to the White House or not. To think PR is suddenly going to be fixed is typical of people who overstate their importance. Wonder how much of their own wealth they have contributed to relief efforts? Wealth they couldn’t even dream about growing up but can be afforded thanks to the United States. Oughta be on their knees kissing the ground in THANKS!! So boring. Smh….
